Football has always been more than just a game and nowhere is that more evident than in our Together Red programme. Supported by the Premier League Fans Fund the initiative transformed groups and match days into moments of connection, pride, and joy for hundreds across the community.
James Cooke, Head of Participation and Inclusion, summed it up perfectly:
“Together Red has been amazing to be part of. I’ve seen people come in shy or on their own and leave with new mates, a smile on their face. It proves football isn’t just about what happens on the pitch – it’s about people, pride and feeling connected. Whether its young fans enjoying their first Barnsley match or older supporters sharing memories that mean the world, you can see the difference it makes. For me, that’s what it’s all about – bringing people together and showing football really can change lives.”
2024–2025 Impact at a Glance
- 951 total participants engaged
- 265 women and girls involved
- 108 from diverse ethnic communities
- 483 engaged adults
- 603 engaged young people
These numbers reflect a growing and inclusive community where everyone is welcome – whether it’s their first time at Oakwell or they’ve been lifelong supporters.
Participant Voices
The heart of Together Red lies in the stories of those who’ve taken part:
- “The atmosphere is so friendly which makes me so happy, and Sean’s group is the highlight of my week.”
- “I didn’t feel confident meeting new people or trying new things, but I feel safe, can learn new skills, and speak to people.”
- One child shared, “It was so cool to walk out at Oakwell with my new t-shirt on. I scored my penalty at half time and felt like a real footballer.”
- Another added, “I love coming before games – playing pool, crafts, and meeting players makes it more exciting. I’ve made new friends here too.”
- A parent said, “Inclusive Reds is a safe space… she can be herself and not feel judged.”
These voices highlight the real impact of the programme – building confidence, creating friendships, and making football accessible and meaningful for everyone.
