March 2013 Sport and Fitness Foundation Level 1

The 16 week Sport and Fitness course is developed to improve students’ physical fitness and give a greater insight into the sports industry. Student fitness levels will be tested weekly in the form of a 1.5 mile run and press ups and sit ups. Students will develop fitness levels, team working skills and experience an improvement in confidence.

Key units included cover areas such as:

* Understanding Health and Exercise

* Understanding the role of nutrition in exercise

* Planning and preparing for personal exercise and nutrition

* Public safety awareness

* Understanding equality and diversity

Entry requirements: 2 GCSEs at grade D-G

Assessment methods: Written reports, practical assessments, portfolios, presentations and posters/ leaflets.

Future opportunities: Successful candidates may progress to further education, such as the Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Sport, the Armed Forces or other vocational opportunities.

Further information: Learners will have the opportunity to register a 5 a side team in the weekly structured enrichment tournament. Students will also have the opportunity to gain vital coaching work experience with the Community programme’s extensive delivery of activities throughout Barnsley.

Students will experience 1 week as a soldier with the Royal Artillery.  Here students will take part in outdoor activities, visit the exceptional Army College in Harrogate and visit the 4th and 5th regiments of the Royal Artillery.

Further activities throughout the course include; orienteering, map reading and command tasks.
