After 83 years of cheering from her living room, Pat, a devoted football fan finally experienced the thrill of a live match at Oakwell Stadium, home of Barnsley Football Club.
The heartwarming moment was made possible thanks to a collaboration between Barnsley FC Community Trust, Barnsley FC and Creative Support at Fitzwilliam Court, Hoyland. Clare Guest, Health and Wellbeing Co-Ordinator at Creative Support, reached out to help make Pat’s lifelong dream a reality. Diagnosed recently with dementia, Pat’s story resonated deeply.
On Thursday, October 23rd, Pat and Clare were invited for a special behind-the-scenes tour of Oakwell. The day included:
- A guided walk through the club’s history
- Watching the first team training
- Meeting players in the changing rooms
- Lunch in the players’ canteen
- Gifted her very own personalised ‘PAT 83’ shirt
But the highlight came just two days later.
On Saturday, October 25th, Pat attended her very first live football match, Barnsley vs. Rotherham, alongside Clare and her daughter Louise. The atmosphere, the crowd, and the roar of the game brought excitement to Pat, who had waited a lifetime for this moment.
“It was a real privilege to get to know Pat and Clare,” said Amy Milne of Barnsley FC Community Trust. “Pat is a genuinely lovely lady, and we’re so proud to have played a part in making her dream come true. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do and we’re already looking forward to creating more special memories like this in the future.”
Clare added, “The entire experience has been truly amazing, “To be able to bring Pat not only to her first live football match, but also behind the scenes at Barnsley FC, was incredibly special. Pat was amazing throughout, especially on match day. It was deeply emotional and something I’ll cherish forever. The Trust is doing remarkable work for remarkable people, and we’re so grateful to have been part of it.”
