Reds Against Hunger

Barnsley FC, Reds in the Community and Barnsley Foodbank join forces again.

On Saturday 2nd April, ahead of Barnsley FC’s fixture against Reading. Barnsley FC, Reds in the Community and Barnsley Food bank will host a food collection, where we will be accepting donations of food and essentials.

As the cost of living continues to rise to record highs the most vulnerable of the reds community are at risk of falling into multiple disadvantage across the town.

Reds in the Community Chief Executive Officer, Paul France said: “This will be the 4th Reds Against Hunger collection held at Oakwell Stadium, and we hope to make this one the biggest so far. We launched the campaign just before Christmas to help support those in need over the Festive period.

We have so far collected 548.5Kg of food, which equates to providing 1306 meals to people in need. If every supporter coming to the match against Reading would bring 1 or 2 items each, we would comfortably beat the combined total for the first 3 collections. That is our aim because sadly, that is the scale of the need. Please help to spread the message and encourage al Reds to bring along a few tins of food. It will make a huge difference to another Red in Barnsley.”

We would therefore like to invite the Barnsley FC family and supporters who are in a position to help, to make a donation on the match day.

An Idea of some items you could donate:

  • LONG LIFE MILK
  • DILUTE/JUICE
  • RICE
  • CUSTARD
  • TINNED FISH
  • PACKET/INSTANT POTATO
  • TINNED POTATOES
  • RICE PUDDING
  • JAM
  • TOOTHPASTE
  • TOOTHBRUSHES
  • SHAMPOO

Georgina Arnold, Client support at Barnsley Foodbank added, “Barnsley Foodbank Partnership has seen the need for food parcels rising ever since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. As we start to trickle out of the pandemic, we are now seeing the effect of bill rises, universal credit changes and the cost of living going up. Between March 2020 and December 2021 we fed 12,031 individuals, 4,432 of these were children under 16.

Reds Against Hunger is such an amazing initiative and helps our food bank greatly with donations, awareness and support. We have already done a handful of successful collections, partnering with Reds in the Community and Barnsley FC, with both monetary and food donations coming in from the generous fans. We’re so grateful for the support from the whole team at the club.”

The Reds in the Community team collection point will be situated outside the main box office from 13:30 on Saturday the 2nd April.

For anyone not able to come to the game, we will have collection points available from Monday 28th March at Barnsley FC Main Reception and Reds in the Community reception in the Indoor Training Centre.

Collections boxes will be available around the ground if supporters would prefer to make a cash donation.

Alternatively Barnsley Foodbank have recently launched an Amazon wishlist, which is an easy hassle-free way of donating their most needed items. This can be found HERE.
