Support Your Local Team on Non-League Day!
Saturday marks Non-League Day and with Barnsley FC not in action, head down and support one of Barnsley’s local teams, including Athersley Rec.
The Penguins host table topping Pickering Town at Sheerien Park on Saturday, with the fixture kicking off at 3pm.
Athersley are currently 16th in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division table with 12 points to their name. A victory against the league leaders could lift them up as high as 12th.
There are yet more ties with Barnsley Football Club as they are managed by former Red, Luke Potter, who made 19 league appearances for the Reds between 2007 – 2012 and has recently been working with the Club’s Academy.
Another local side in action include Penistone Church, who travel to high-flying Handsworth Parramore. Penistone are 18th in the table, sitting one point below Rec.
In the Evo-Stik Premier League, table topping Shaw Lane AFC travel to Leicester-based side Barwell, while Worsbrough Bridge Athletic are also on the road, facing Doncaster outfit Armthorpe Welfare in NCEL Division One.
Created by James Doe in 2010, Non-League Day allows clubs below Football League level the chance to showcase their talent to a wider audience and gives local teams a much-needed financial boost.
The fixture traditionally takes place during the international break and aims to support Non-League clubs, most of which are run predominantly by volunteers.
