Barnsley FC Tackles Prostate Cancer
Reds in the Community last night joined forces with South West Yorkshire NHS Partnership to help address the issue of Prostate Cancer.
The talk was held as part of our Fit Reds programme, with week five of the current nine-week plan containing a special guest speaker.
Last night’s session was delivered by Nick Sennitt and Kevin Bryson of the NHS Partnership, who explained why men should to be aware of the risks of Prostate Cancer to their health.
Sennitt said: “There’s a real need for men to be able to get a better understanding of the issues around mental health, testicular cancer and prostate cancer, things that can affect relationships.
“But we’re finding men won’t enrol on a course like this so we have to actively go out into places like Reds in the Community to meet them and discuss these issues.”
Since starting the sessions in 2014, both Nick and Kevin have created an environment where men are comfortable tackling these sensitive issues and reducing the stigma as a result.
Our Fit Reds programme was delighted to be able to offer this talk in conjunction with South West Yorkshire NHS Partnership.
“We’ve been running this session for three years and we’ve had an amazing response. We’ve had great feedback because there’s been a forum where men can talk about these topics.
“Breaking down stigmas around these topics is paramount. When delivering these courses, if even one person gets themselves checked out it’s been worth it,” Bryson added.
The Fit Reds is proud to continue promoting sessions to tackle men’s health in line with our remit as a registered charity.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men accounting for around a quarter (26%) of cases. In the UK, 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, while the odds for black men are just 1 in 4.
