Barnsley FC Community Trust Shadow Scholarship student signs two-year Scholarship with Barnsley FC Academy.

We are delighted for our education student Aston Wilson who has recently signed a two-year scholarship at Barnsley FC Academy.

Aston recently received the offer of a two year professional scholarship within the academy following a successful trial period. Aston joined the programme back in the summer of 2023 having been a former academy player at Doncaster Rovers in his younger years.

Barnsley FC Community Trust Lead Shadow Scholarship Coach, Sam Sutton said: ‘We are delighted that Aston has signed scholarship terms with the club. He is a prime example of where hard work, humility and talent can take you. Aston is extremely deserving of this opportunity, and we have no doubt that he will grab it with both hands (literally!). We wish Aston every success in his journey,  and hope he can inspire others to strive to follow in his footsteps.’

From early on in the season Aston had the opportunity to train in with the academy, often a couple of times a week with either the U18 or U21 squad. This is an opportunity that has been afforded to some of our high performing players over recent years due to the close working relationship between the programme and academy. In February 2024 Aston was offered an official eight week trial for the U18 squad, within that trial he had opportunities to train in with the first team, and was on the bench for the U21’s victory away at Charlton played on the Valley.

As a programme we are very proud of Aston’s achievements, we wish him well with the academy moving forwards and will watch his progress with interest.

Barnsley FC Academy PDP Coach Ryan Laight added: ‘Aston initially came in as a training goalkeeper, joining sessions a couple of times a week. During this time, Aston’s potential was recognised, leading to a trial period being offered in early 2024. Throughout the trial, Aston progressed well and showed good consistency in his training, which was rewarded with the offer of a two year professional scholarship. We are excited to have Aston with us full time, and look forward to playing a part in his further development over the next two years.
