Reds in the Community played host to the St Mary’s Academy Trust Annual Football Tournament this afternoon at Oakwell.
The competition brought together Key Stage Two teams from the seven St Mary’s Academy Trust Barnsley schools.
All Saints Academy, Darton Primary, Queens Road Academy, Royston St John Baptist Primary, St Mary’s Church of England Primary, The Mill Academy and West Meadows Primary competed in the tournament.
Each school brought a girls team from year three and four whilst the boys’ competition incorporated sides from year five and six.
In both tournaments, the winner was decided by a league table after each team had played each other once.
Royston St John’s came out on top in the girls’ competition, winning all six of their fixtures in a fine team performance throughout the afternoon.
St Mary’s C of E finished in second place, only succumbing to the eventual winners while 13 points was enough for All Saints to claim third in the final league table.
Darton won the boys’ tournament after winning five and drawing just one of their six fixtures.
Second-placed Royston also remained unbeaten throughout the afternoon while St Mary’s finished third with 11 points.
The competition, which was managed and refereed by Reds in the Community staff and students, was sponsored by Provide Education.
Provide Education’s Senior Branch Consultant Darren Artley was in attendance at the tournament and spoke of its success.
He said: “We work with the Trust. We’ve worked with them for a number of years. We always try and get involved with these events. This year we’ve sponsored the football tournament down at Oakwell. Everyone seems to be having a good time.
“The kids have loved it, I think the parents have loved it. It’s been very competitive. For the kids, it’s getting out and something a bit different. It gets them out of the classroom. They’ve absolutely loved it. There’s a smile on all of their faces, everyone’s a winner. A lot of them are Barnsley fans so getting down here and seeing the facilities – they’re absolutely in awe of it.”
