Barnsley FC players Alex Mowatt and Ben Williams were joined by Barnsley FC Ladies’ Mollie Crump in visiting children at today’s Soccer Camps.
In another combined men’s and ladies first team visit, the trio answered questions ranging from playing for the Reds to their favourite farm animals before signing autographs and posing for selfies.
The players then split into two teams for a game of head tennis alongside some of the children.
Alex and Mollie’s team came out on top against Ben and Reds in the Community’s coach Joe Bedford.
Left back Ben enjoyed meeting the kids at the Camps and previewed Saturday’s home fixture with Southend United.
He said: “It’s been really enjoyable coming up as a professional. I was their age once so it’s good to see young people thriving to get better. As a young lad, I know how much it meant for the first team to come and show their faces and give some advice to the younger lads.
“We needed a reaction after the Tuesday’s result. It was a good result, hard graft needed to get it. We’re just looking to get on a bit of a winning streak now and climb up the table. It’s always good to play at home, the fans are always excellent. Hopefully they can get behind us on Saturday and help us get a good result.”
Chris Hamilton’s Ladies side had a tough start to the season but have been impressing in recent weeks, currently boasting a four-game winning streak.
Mollie, who has netted twice during her side’s October purple patch, reflected on being invited to visit the Soccer Camps.
She said: “I’ve had a really great time. It’s surreal being around here and getting to spend time with the kids. The Ladies are getting so much more time and being recognised more. It’s a great time to be around the club. It feels so special, I never thought I’d be doing this kind of stuff. Seeing all the girls – I was in their shoes at one time and it’s just a great thing to be doing.”
Places are still available on the final day of Soccer Camps tomorrow, including our Mini-Kickers session for children aged 2-4!
