Pupils from Springvale Primary School were treated to a matchday experience with Reds in the Community on Saturday.
32 children took part in a morning of fun football activities with RITC’s FA qualified and DBS checked staff before seeing the Reds take on Southend United at Oakwell.
The day began at 11am, with the children being given a behind the scenes tour of Oakwell Stadium, getting the chance to see everywhere from where Daniel Stendel holds his team talks to where the Reds Head Coach watches his team from the sidelines.
After getting an insight into the proud history of Barnsley FC and their Stadium, the pupils took part in a coaching session at the Oakwell indoor centre.
The children then enjoyed a lunch from McDonald’s before being escorted back into the Stadium to see the Reds’ 1-0 win over Southend, courtesy of Kieffer Moore’s dramatic late winner.
Lee McClure, Springvale Primary Headteacher, spoke about how enjoyable the day was for his pupils and staff.
He said: “It was a great and very cost effective way to entertain and inspire a large group of aspiring footballers. The club looked after us and the children will remember the experience for a long time.”
Lee’s enthusiasm was also reflected in the children who attended the matchday experience.
Year three pupil Riley said: “It was great to see the changing rooms and the places where players train to get better every day.” Charlie, who is in year five, added: “I’ve had an amazing day! Barnsley won so that was the best bit. I’ve loved the food, the tour, playing football and enjoying the match with my mates.”
Sports Development Officer Kieron Campbell organised the day and hopes that other schools will follow in Springvale’s footsteps.
Kieron said: “We obviously provide a matchday experience to children through our Saturday Matchday Club but we’ve never offered something like this to schools before. Saturday was a great success and I’m very excited to keep providing this service to local schools moving forward. All of the kids looked to have enjoyed themselves and hopefully we will have other school children visiting Oakwell in the near future.”
