‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ Barnsley FC Open Day 2017

This year, 2017, marks 130 years since Barnsley Football Club was founded in 1887.

To honour this landmark, Reds in the Community is celebrating the anniversary by involving supporters and the wider community in exploring and telling the story of Barnsley FC and its home ground, Oakwell.

Through the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Creative Minds initiative, new displays are being developed for Oakwell focusing on key events in Barnsley FC’s history from 1887 to the present day.

Find out more about the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project by coming along to talk to us in the East Stand concourse during Sunday’s Open Day.

Can you hear the Ponty Roaring?

Volunteers for the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project, have been interviewing former Barnsley FC players about their memories of the Reds, and the part they have each played in the wider club story.  Local company, Deadline Digital, has been capturing these interviews on film.

The latest in our sequence of film interviews is to be screened for the first time at the 2017 Open Day.  Come along and hear some of Ronnie Glavin’s memories of his time at Oakwell!

Reds in the Community is currently seeking Reds fans’ memories and pictures from this era. We want to hear your stories and see your photos from these special days!

Be sure to share your memories with us in the East Stand concourse at the Open Day.

Art Works Inspired by Barnsley FC’s Heritage

Through the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project, new artworks exploring the living heritage of Barnsley FC have been created by artist, Ben Mosley.

Ben is fast becoming a recognised international artist, having been commissioned by the biggest organisations within sport including, Wembley Stadium, Manchester United, The London Olympics, and The Emirates and Creek Golf clubs in Dubai.

Ben has been a Reds supporter since 1987. He has strong family ties with Barnsley with his father and grandparents having been from the town.

Ben said: “Barnsley Football Club has been central to my upbringing and has played a huge part in the bond I have with my father. This bond has been the inspiration to my football inspired artwork.”

Come along and see Ben’s Barnsley FC inspired work at the Open Day, where he will be on hand to discuss his work with supporters.

Sharing Memories

Young Volunteers undertaking the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme with Reds in the Community have been working with the Sporting Memories Network as part of the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project.

Our NCS young volunteers will be encouraging residents from Panaceon Healthcare’s Chapel and Field View Care Homes to share their sporting memories with us, including their memories of the Club.

Find out more about the reminiscence work we have been doing through the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project to ensure everyone has the opportunity to share their memories with us!

Heritage Displays for Oakwell

Manchester-based design company, The Office of Craig, has been appointed by Reds in the Community to work with us and our project stakeholders on the design and production of heritage displays for Oakwell through the ‘Our Club, Our Ground, Our Past, Our Future’ project.

The Office of Craig’s Creative Director and Founder, Craig Oldham, who hails from Barnsley (and is a huge Barnsley supporter) is bringing his experience in both sports stadia design, and design in the cultural sector, to the project.

Find out more about how we are approaching the developing heritage displays for Oakwell on the day!
