Strolling Reds Launches

Reds in the Community are delighted to announce the launch of Strolling Reds, a free weekly walking programme for local adults.

The programme is open to adults of any size, age or gender, with walks commencing from various locations around Barnsley and surrounding areas.

Every Thursday, the walk begins at 10am and lasts approximately two hours including a rest stop for hot or cold refreshments.

The aim of the group is to help local people get out of the house and improve general health in a relaxed and supportive environment.

On top of the health benefits, there is a huge social aspect to the group including getting involved in theatre nights and trips to the seaside.

The initiative is the first that new Health Officer Sean Margison has launched since starting his role at Oakwell.

Having managed a similar programme in the past, Sean is looking forward to helping the group grow under the Reds in the Community banner.

He said: “Strolling Reds is a weekly walking group. They tend to walk for around an hour with a coffee stop in between, with a total of around two hours. It’s aimed at anybody who wants to do a little bit of socialising and physical activity. It’s definitely not a hiking group, it is more for the social side. It does lead onto other things socially such as day trips and dinners and that sort of thing as well. We walk at the slowest person’s pace. Don’t feel pressured to be pushing yourselves beyond your limits, it is a nice stroll.”

There is no need to sign up online, simply turn up at the meeting point of the walk and join what is a friendly and welcoming group for everyone within the community.

*Please note that all walks are subject to change due to weather conditions. Keep an eye on Reds in the Community’s website and social media accounts for any changes.
