Kirk Balk Academy came out on top in a six-a-side girls U13 tournament with other local schools at Oakwell today.
The EFL competition brought together six schools with the winner progressing to the EFL regional finals in 2019, where they will represent Barnsley FC against other professional clubs.
Kirk Balk were joined by Castleford Academy, Darton College, Horizon Community College, Ossett Academy and Outwood Academy Shafton in the tournament.
Each team played each other once with Ossett topping the table at the end of the league and Kirkbalk, Horizon and Ossett making up the rest of the semi-finals.
There was no shortage of drama in either semi-final as both ended in goalless draws, meaning both games would be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
Kirk Balk and Shafton held their nerve from the spot to progress to the final.
An entertaining final followed with Kirk Balk sealing their place at the EFL regional finals with a 3-1 victory.
The tournament was organised by Women & Girls Development Officer Lynn Goodman and refereed by RITC Community Coaches.
Lynn was pleased to see a high quality of football played and a similarly impressive attitude shown from all of the players.
She said: “Every time we run a tournament the quality of football seems to get better and better. More importantly, it was great to see that the girls were showing each other respect and playing fairly as well. There wasn’t much between all of the teams in terms of standard and I think we saw that with two penalty shoot-outs. Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to taking Kirk Balk to the regional finals in 2019!”
