Digital Open Evening

We will be hosting a digital open evening on Wednesday 16th December for the 2021/22 academic year from 18:00 until 19:00!

Reds in the Community are pleased to offer Level 1, 2, 3 and Foundation Degree Sports Courses for local young people aged 16 – 23. The alternative learning environment based at Barnsley Football Club boasts outstanding sporting facilities and continues to be highly engaging and successful in retaining young people in learning as well as supporting their progression into employment or further training.

Studying with Reds in the Community also gives students the chance to represent Barnsley FC’s groundbreaking Shadow Scholarship programme, in an exciting initiative which develops their footballing ability in the hope of moving into professional football through Barnsley Football Club. Whatever your background, age or abilities, we’ve got something to help you make the most of your potential.

Level 1 – Introduction to Coaching

Level 1 Introduction to Coaching is an excellent starting point for you to develop a career in sport. Based on-site at Oakwell you will study the basics of the sports industry with an emphasis on coaching and delivering activity sessions. The programme is an academic year in length (September to June) and not only gives you an insight into sport but develops your confidence, self-esteem and communication skills. Alongside the coaching element of the course you will also access CV building workshops, sessions on developing interview skills and employment taster days.

Level 2 – Sport, Exercise and Health

This Level 2 Sport, Exercise and Health programme has been developed to give learners the opportunity to enter employment in the sport and the active leisure sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. This route provides a wide range of practical sporting experiences in relation to the sports industry which can assist in the decision-making process of what career route learners would like to pursue next through the teaching of practical sport, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and healthy eating and sports coaching.

Level 3 – Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development

Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is intended for post-16 learners wanting to progress directly to employment, including self-employment, in sports coaching and development roles. It is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education, where learners would have the added advantage of using this qualification to obtain part-time employment while studying. The extension, breadth and depth of optional units in this qualification give learners employment opportunities for working with participants of all ages, from children in primary and secondary schools, to adults of all ages. Possible job roles include community coach, sport-specific school coach, sport-specific after-school coach and weekend multi-sports holiday coach. Learners will also have the skills and expertise to work with beginners up to high-level performers.

Foundation Degree

This provides students with the opportunity to gain a Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and Development, an industry-recognised coaching award. In conjunction with the University of South Wales, this two-year course designed by the English Football League Trust, develops all of the required experiences to operate as a professional coach. Students will learn key skills associated with football coaching and development, social inclusion, and sports management. The programme will be based predominantly at Barnsley Football Club, but will also include a minimum of five days a year at the University of South Wales Sport Park, a £3.7m state-of-the-art coaching and performance development centre.
