The Shadow Scholarship picked up their first three points of the NFYL U19 campaign with a deserved victory at Crystal Palace.
In tricky conditions due to a swirling wind, goals either side of half time secured the three points for Mark Tinker’s side.
Barnsley adapted to the conditions quicker in the opening stages as Aidan Hargreaves forced an early corner.
Brandon Fearn’s long throw quickly became the Reds’ key threat as Jack Bennett headed just wide before Callum Spragg couldn’t keep his effort down from the edge of the six yard box.
Mark Tinker’s side opened the scoring shortly afterwards however as Fearn’s bullet throw in was palmed into the back of the net by the helpless Palace ‘keeper.
Bennett saw another headed effort fall just wide of the mark before the hosts brought Lewis French into action for the first time with a close-range effort straight at the Reds shot-stopper.
HT: Crystal Palace 0-1 Barnsley
Palace began a much more even second half on the front foot, with Barnsley looking dangerous on the counter.
Harry Mayo and Bennett combined to put the latter in on goal but his shot was blocked behind for a corner.
The tireless pressing off-the-ball across the team paid off shortly afterwards however as Mark Tinker’s side doubled their lead.
Jimmy Pursell won the ball deep inside Palace territory before levelling to give Jake Vigrass a simple finish.
A couple of nose injuries to Dom Claxton and Mayo forced the visitors into two changes, with both players back up on their feet following short stoppages.
Palace were inches away from pulling a goal back as the game closed in on the final 10 minutes, but their striker’s powerfureboundede-bounded off the post and to safety.
Bennett saw a couple of chances fall just wide of the post late on but the Reds held on to take a hard-fought three points back to Barnsley.
