The Barnsley FC Shadow Scholarship U19’s progressed to round two of the National Football Youth League Cup with a commanding victory over Northampton Town.
Barnsley dominated the early stages and soon had the perfect opportunity to take the lead after Jack Bennett was brought down by the visiting ‘keeper.
Vigrass smashed the resulting penalty off the underside of the crossbar and in for the opening goal of the game.
Brandon Fearn’s long throw nearly forced a quick-fire second after Callum Walmsley flicked it on however the Northampton defence cleared the danger.
Aidan Hargreaves saw an effort cleared off the line however Barnsley recycled the ball for Vigrass, who beat a defender before firing an unstoppable strike into the top corner for his second goal.
The Reds were 3-0 up within the opening half hour too, as Walmsley headed in from Bailey Oates’ free kick.
Barnsley were agonisingly close to adding a fourth goal 10 minutes later as Dom Claxton’s powerful drive cannoned off the crossbar, before the Northampton ‘keeper somehow palmed away Fearn’s headed rebound.
The hosts did extend the lead on the brink of half time however with Vigrass wrong-footing the ‘keeper with a free kick from just outside the box to complete his hat-trick.
Barnsley began the second half in perfect style as Hargreaves latched onto a through ball and found the top corner with a fine finish just seconds after the restart.
Trailing 5-0, Town began to push more players forward and nearly got their reward as Walmsley made a vital block to turn a goal-bound shot behind before Brad Greenfield made a fantastic reaction save from the resulting corner.
Some more Vigrass magic nearly created another goal for Barnsley, beating two defenders before pulling the ball back across goal, however, Hargreaves couldn’t get enough behind his effort on goal.
Mason Butcher called the busy Northampton ‘keeper into action again with 20 minutes remaining, forcing a good low save from outside of the box.
The front two combined for a sixth goal just over five minutes later, Hargreaves completing a brace with a close-range header following an inch-perfect cross from Bennett.
Northampton pulled a goal back late on with a close-range header of their own, giving Greenfield no chance from six yards out.
Oates and Vigrass both saw free kicks deflected over the bar before Greenfield pulled off a strong save late on.
Jimmy Pursell darted through the Northampton defence in the dying moments but could only drag his shot wide.
