Shadow Scholarship | Barnsley 1-2 Newcastle

The Barnsley FC Shadow Scholars fell to a home defeat against Newcastle United Foundation in the National Football Youth League this afternoon.

Having trailed 2-0 at half time, a goal from Essa N’Dow had given the Reds hope but the visitors held on to claim the three points.

Jack Bennett was inches away from opening the scoring with just over two minutes played as he blocked the Newcastle goalkeeper’s attempted clearance onto the crossbar.

Ben Marsh tapped in from the resulting goalmouth scramble but the referee’s whistle had already been blown for a foul.

Lewis French pulled off a stunning diving save 15 minutes later but the loose ball fell at the feet of a Newcastle player who had the simple task of passing into an empty net to open the scoring.

The Reds had Brandon Fearn to thank for not falling further behind shortly afterwards, the centre back coming up with a vital series of blocks inside the box in quick succession.

Barnsley’s task became even tougher just before half time as a one-two created the opportunity for the visitors’ striker to fire into the bottom corner and double the lead.

Mark Tinker opted for three changes at the break with Jake Barton replacing French in goal alongside N’Dow and Sam Cook being introduced to the game.

The changes provided more urgency early in the second half, with N’Dow creating an opening for Jake Vigrass who shot just over the top corner.

Bennett headed over from inside the box before Newcastle saw a good chance of their own fly over the top of the bar at the other end.

N’Dow turned in a low cross from Bennett to give the Reds a chance with just under 15 minutes remaining.

Jake Barton made an impressive save from a curling shot from outside of the box to keep the deficit at one goal.

The Reds had one final chance to claim a point in the dying moments but Sam Cook couldn’t direct his header from Vigrass’ free kick on target.
