The Barnsley Football Club Shadow Scholarship will have the fantastic opportunity to go on a Barcelona tour in 2019!
Players on the inaugural year of Reds in the Community’s football programme have already had the chance to visit St Georges Park, integrate with Barnsley FC’s Academy and compete against similar setups across the country in the National Football Youth League.
Mark Tinker’s squad will travel to Spain in April 2019 for a five-day training camp at Futbol Salou’s top-class football and rehabilitation facilities.
As part of the self-funded trip, the Shadow Scholarship will face foreign opposition in competitive matches, testing the players’ ability to adapt to different styles of play.
Outside of training and fixture commitments, there will also be the chance to visit the city of Barcelona and the Nou Camp, one of the world’s most famous football stadiums.
The Scholars will fly from Leeds/Bradford Airport and be based at the Camping & Resort Sangulí Salou.
Mark, who has led similar international tours throughout his career, is excited to take a RITC team abroad for the first time ever.
He said: “To have a team going to play on foreign soil and test themselves against foreign opposition in the first year of launching the programme is very positive. It’s huge in terms of life experience. Some of the boys might not have been abroad before, nevermind on a football tour with their teammates. On the Thursday, they’re going to get the opportunity to go to the Nou Camp to visit one of the most famous stadiums in the world. For me, there is no better motivation.”
Education Officer Mark Crossfield believes that the Barcelona tour will give the players a further insight into the life of a professional footballer.
Mark Crossfield: “April 2019 will be the first time a football team from Reds in the Community will take part in a training camp abroad. This is a very exciting for the development of our programme and what we offer here. The Shadow Scholarship squad will head out to Barcelona to train in a state of the art training complex, training and playing competitive games throughout the week. This opportunity will give the squad a real feel of what it would be like for a professional footballer, training everyday in this kind of environment. They will eat and stay together as well which will also further develop the team spirit within our programme.”
A squad of 17 players will travel to Barcelona with Mark Tinker and other members of his coaching team.
Centre back Callum Walmsley, who joined the Shadow Scholarship programme having previously been in Chesterfield FC’s setup, believes the Tour will provide an incentive for the players to continue their hard work.
The 16-year-old added: “I’m looking forward. We’re getting to get to see a different environment and different types of football. We’re going to go to the Nou Camp. Seeing what you can get to if you get to that level. It’s something to aspire to.”
