Level 1 – Introduction to Coaching

The Level 1 Introduction to Coaching is an excellent starting point for you to develop a career in sport. Based on-site at Oakwell you will study the basics of the sports industry with an emphasis on coaching and delivering activity sessions. The programme is 1 academic year in length (September to June) and not only gives you an insight into sport but develops your confidence, self-esteem and communication skills. Alongside the coaching element of the course you will also access CV building workshops, sessions on developing interview skills and employment taster days.

The practical workshops, work taster and volunteering opportunities give young people the chance to develop their skills, knowledge and experience that employers require. The programme runs Tuesday – Thursday 10:00-15:30.

Entry Requirements

16-18 years old.

No GCSE’s required; just a successful interview, a strong interest in sport and a willingness to learn.

Written reports, practical assessments, portfolios, presentations and posters/leaflets

Future opportunities

Successful candidates may progress to further education, such as the Level 2 Sport Course, employment or other vocational opportunities.

Further information

Learners will have the opportunity to represent Reds in the Community in football matches against other football clubs or gain vital coaching work experience within other RITC activities delivered at Oakwell or across Barnsley. This route also offers a wide range of other work placements opportunities around Oakwell.
