Case Study: Becca’s Story

Rebecca Owen started with Reds in the Community in 2012 on a Level 1 Foundation Learning Programme and made the decision to join us having spent the summer as an NCS participant.

By her own admission she was severely lacking in confidence but acknowledged that, in order to follow her career goal of becoming a sports coach, she needed to work on this aspect.  She felt that Oakwell was the best place for her because she would be near to a sporting environment, working in a small team of peers and staff and she felt that she could see her progression route more clearly here at the club.

Rebecca has certainly made positive steps in pursuit of her goal, she successfully completed Level 1 Foundation Learning, Level 2 BTEC Sport and is on the verge of completing the BTEC Level 3 Sport course. She is a popular member of the course and no longer hesitates to put herself forward for additional responsibilities such as raising awareness of female participation in football. This has been demonstrated by Rebecca completing her FA Level 1 Coaching badge and volunteering with the Female Football Development programme with Reds in the Community. Rebecca hopes to move into an Apprenticeship in a local primary school as a teaching assistant whilst also continuing coaching football in September 2016.

Rebecca deserves recognition for the amount of effort and determination that she has shown to overcome her own personal barriers. She is a credit to herself and great example of the ‘Study with the Reds’ programme. Well played!
